The story from the fourth image collating the previous three images

Everybody these days has a mobile phone, I mean everybody!!! The .COM era is slowly catching on to every single person on this planet. What did we do the days before we had mobile phones? It's hard to remember. Everyone who has an old phone that still works should send them to this organisation. Getting the developing world connected to the best networks, such as O2, Virgin, etc. Spare your old phone, connect with the world.

This story I took from the Architect student, age 24

The text I thought would be most appropriate for this image is: Connect the world. Or something to that effect.

Assignment 2 stories written by a child aged 8 called Zoe.

Big boys playing with ipods and iphones in the ipod shop. I have the ipod nano in pink. It's my favorite colour.

Haha. A funny man with no head! Is it a magic trick? He looks like a magician.

Pic 3

I have a baby brother. It's a picture of a mummy looking after her baby in a hot country.

Assignment 2 stories written by a community education student in her second year. She comes from the western Isles.

Society today. We judge people within the first thirty seconds of looking at them. We see a group of youths, we expect trouble. Labeling young people, ASBOS, hood-rats, hoodlums, junkies. Soon they will become the label they are given. What do you expect? Society is flawed.

"I would forget my head if t wasn't screwed on" Probably the most over used saying. But why? Is todays society getting more forgetful or are we trying to fit too much into our lives? Do we take too much on so that we can't live life the way we want? We become sloppy, we forget things and we no longer appreciate what we have. We only live once. Therefore, we should slow down, take a look around us and realise what we have before it's too late. Let the people we care about it know it and be grateful we will never loose or forget our heads!

Babies. Britain has a massive teenage pregnancy rate, we also live in a world where celebrities are adopting babies from countries all over the world every other week. Is this right? Of course not, but we see all of these starving children and their parents or lack of sprawled all over the news and we feel horrible. Yet when I celebrity adopts a child from the developing world, they are WRONG in the publics eyes, mearly for saving a life.

Today we skated to the apple store to check out the new iphone out today. I'd heard so much about it on the TV and was told "It's the next big thing". All I can say is "Holy crap" that thing is the muts nuts. I have to get one! All the boys thought it was cool and we can listen to our tunes, surfing the concrete. It saves us carrying an ipod and mobile in our super tight skinny jeans. Plus, MULLETS ARE BACK IN BABYEE!!!

The next big must see attraction, the headless man! Located in sleepy downtown Texas, Dave, the headless man can be seen walking about bumping into objects and generally doing silly things! It is believed that Dave was born this way but still lives a normal active life. Dave thrives on meeting new people and makes a living like many other street performers doing shows and entertaining. Come see Dave, the headless man!!

Dianon and her baby son catching a moment out of the midday sun in Vancouver BC. Homelessness is a growing problem in Canada's major cities with the government doing the bare minimum to help the situation. These poor people need your support to lead a normal life. Please donate, thank you.

My visit to Realtime world

At the beginning of this month I went to a tour of Real Time World with Central Station. We were given exclusive access to all areas of the building. As we walked in, the first thing you would see sitting proudly in a corner cabinet was the prestigious awards Real Time had won for their contribution to the gaming industry. We were firstly taken through to a 'board meeting' type room, where we were given some statistics on the earnings and employee numbers: Real Time World is only eight years old, they have 300 Dundee staff, their most successful project (Grand Theft Auto) grossed 70 million sales. We were also given a sneek peek preview of their new up and coming project, "Crackdown".

Each floor had a sea of computers, that were in operation by invisible men. Apparently no one seemed to be working that day :-)

All in all, the tour was very insightful and I learned a lot about the gaming industry. I would encourage students to go and explore something that is totally alien to them. It's quite eye opening and you learn something new.

Analysing photos

Myself and Jen Robinson have prepared a video chat, discussing the photos we gave each other to analyse. Unfortunately we could not upload it to our blog. However, we will try putting it on youtube or something so that we can link it to each of our blogs.

Research Barley

A paper I recently studied on barley presented the results of the cumulative methane production obtained in the co-digestion of the pre-treated barley waste with sewage sludge. The present results show that the alkaline pre-treatment of wastes like barley is beneficial because it significantly improved the (anaerobic) biodegradability.

Barley alone reduces the rate of methane production. It produces 0.22m3. Whereas, kitchen waste produces 64%. This shows that if you combine the two, there is a significant reduction in methanation, which in turn reduces the amount of wastes to be land-filled. However, when the barley waste was subjected to *alkaline hydrolysis pre-treatment before co-digestion with activated sludge, the methane production increased to 222LCH4 (STP)/KgVS initial and the total and volatile solids reductions increased to 67% and 84% respectively.

From my study of this uncovered information, I was asked to create an A2 board, which relayed the message I wanted to convey to the general members of the public. My message was: More barley waste should be treated with alkaline hydrolysis in order to provide the world with many benefits, such as, increased methane production, improved anaerobic biodegradability, reduced amount of wastes to be land-filled, alternative fuel source, gas, heating and the reduction of Carbon Dioxide emissions.

*Alkaline Hydrolysis- a water based chemical reducing process using strong alkali in water at temperatures of up to 180C (350F) to rapidly yet sympathetically reduce the body to ash. It is essentially a highly accelerated version of natural decomposition chemistry. This is a natural process found in the body decomposition after death.

CAD brief

Today we have been given our new brief for our CAD classes. Basically, we have to design an app (for the iphone) through the use of a sketchbook and the application photoshop. Once the app is complete, we will be using Dreamweaver to create a web page that will promote the new app. We could also use Flash elements as animation for the web page. This is going to be quite a challenging project, mainly because there are so many apps already available. However, the process should be interesting as it is a new challenge for on screen designers.
